undergrad at Graceland University in Iowa (the 2nd best Graceland in the country). I took a few years off
after undergrad and moved to St. Louis in order to dabble in the world of professional soccer, and also
found myself working as a scribe on the side, where I fell in love with the idea of becoming an
emergency medicine physician. In 2019 I started my medical career at the O.G. osteopathic school A.T
Still University in Kirksville, MO, but being that sunshine >>> snow, I took the opportunity to rotate at
Copa my 4th year and knew it was where I belonged after my first shift. Not only did I feel immediately
included in this huge family, but the program itself provided ample opportunity to become involved in
specific areas of medicine I was interested in, including wilderness medicine, sports medicine, and the
ability to improve on my medical Spanish. My fiancé and I are stoked to be moving to Phoenix and over
the next few years you’ll find us out hiking/skiing/snowboarding, seeking out the best taco + margarita
joints, partaking in spontaneous dive bar crawls, or hanging out at home playing board games with our
little family of one dog (Remi) and three cats (Maia, Quincy, and Kovu). Hopefully we get to meet some
of y’all as you rotate through Copa and see what the hype is all about for yourself![/fildisi_slogan][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][fildisi_single_image image=”37029″ image_full_column=”yes”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][fildisi_slogan title=”Tanner Bollig” subtitle=”Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine – Arizona” button_text=”” button2_text=””]Hey everyone!! My name is Tanner Bollig and I was born and raised right here in Phoenix, Arizona. I went to the University of California Berkeley where I studied molecular and cell biology. I loved the Bay Area but my home was calling me back as I worked as a scribe in some of the local emergency departments. This is what ignited my love for the field, the people, and the lifestyle of emergency medicine. Throughout medical school at Mayo Clinic that passion for emergency never left and I was lucky enough to rotate at Maricopa where the patients and the people made it an easy decision to stay for residency. Outside of medicine I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, most of which all live within 20 minutes! I am absolutely addicted to playing bad golf, pickleball, skiing and hiking. A day brewery hopping isn’t too bad either. I went to McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston where I was fortunate to work with some fantastic emergency docs in a busy urban setting. Their passion for the field and the meaningful interactions I had with patients really showed me the breadth of what emergency medicine has to offer and sealed the deal that it was the right career for me. I’m excited to get back to the West and train at Copa. While interviewing I was struck by the fun and supportive program culture, the variety of training environments, and the flexibility of the curriculum with a ton of elective time—all at a strong, well-established program in a great place to live. I know that training here will prepare me for any path my future career might take! I’m the lucky husband to a lovely lady and am the proud dad to two cute little boys. Before medical school, I lived in Argentina for a couple of years where I fell in love with Latin American culture and the Spanish language (and acquired a taste for yerba mate!). I played baseball in college and obtained my undergraduate and master’s degrees from Grand View University back in Iowa. After leaving Grand View I spent a year living on the Big Island of Hawaii. While there I worked at two amazing golf courses (Kona Country Club and The Club at Hokuli’a), became a dog dad and got engaged to my beautiful wife. I ended up returning home to Des Moines, IA for medical school where my passion and love for emergency medicine began to flourish. Nowadays, my wife and I live out of a camper with our dog Mika. Our favorite thing to is travel and we can usually be found spending most of our free time outdoors hiking, snowboarding, camping, golfing, etc. I chose CopaEM because of the people here and the amazing culture they have built! The quality of training, geographical location and family-like atmosphere is second to none. I knew I wanted to train at a county program and absolutely fell in love with Copa during my away rotation because of the culture and teaching style. My EM interests include social emergency
medicine, palliative care, and medical education. In my spare time, I enjoy playing with my standard poodle (Edison), watching reality TV, baking, eating delicious food, and hitting the gym (so I can eat more delicious food). Although I’ve enjoyed my journey thus far in NY, I’m thrilled to embark on a new adventure in Phoenix, Arizona. I’ll be joining an exceptional team of residents committed to teamwork in all aspects of the residency, as we strive for excellence in the exciting field of emergency medicine. Aside from my primary drive to serve others as an emergency physician, I’m also passionate about tackling engineering-style problems and contributing to projects that improve quality and safety in medicine. My favorite side quests include a variety of outdoor activities: biking, hiking, running, skiing, and playing tennis, soccer, and volleyball. I also enjoy playing classical piano to unwind after a busy day. I can’t wait to see where this adventure will take me, and how I can contribute to the growth and success of the residency and its mission.[/fildisi_slogan][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][fildisi_single_image image=”37009″ image_full_column=”yes”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][fildisi_slogan title=”Fathima Haseefa” subtitle=”University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix” button_text=”” button2_text=””]Hello! I completed my undergrad at Arizona State University where I was on the Western Equestrian team. During my premed years, I had the opportunity to work alongside Copa grads as an ED scribe and was blown away by their preparedness to handle anything or anyone that comes in through the ED doors. With a growing interest in EM, I started medical school and got an MPH at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. From day one of my rotation at Copa, I knew that this program would provide me with phenomenal training including exposure to high volume, vast pathology, multiple practice settings, a variety of specialty tracks, as well as plenty of elective time to explore my niche in EM—all while having the opportunity to serve the underserved. After experiencing the Copa culture firsthand, I could easily see myself spending the next three years here, surrounded by residents working to build each other up and faculty who are eager to teach and are truly invested in our personal and professional development. I am stoked to be part of the Copa family![/fildisi_slogan][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][fildisi_single_image image=”37010″ image_full_column=”yes”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][fildisi_slogan title=”Jordan Hilton” subtitle=”The College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest” button_text=”” button2_text=””]Hey everyone, I’m Jordan! Skiing is probably my favorite thing to do but I also love trail running, camping, horseback riding, water skiing, golfing, playing and watching all sports, and (surprise!) anything that is active and/or outside. I am married to an awesome labor and delivery nurse and we have three kids (ages 6, 3, and almost 1) who are as fun as they are busy. I could not be more excited to be training at Copa. It was clear during my away rotation here that the acuity and volume is extremely high, it has great county and academic exposure, and the residents and faculty are the coolest group of people I worked with during any point of medical school. I was extremely impressed with the knowledge and confidence of everyone I worked with while I was here and knew I would get excellent training. On top of that, it’s in a location that provides something for everybody. For my family, you can’t beat the amazing outdoors, year-round sun, and great sports scene that Arizona has to offer. I’m Maddy. I was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. After a short stint at Wisconsin for undergrad (Go Badgers!) I finished up medical school close to home at the University of Minnesota. During medical school, I was lucky enough to rotate through a true county hospital and fell in love with the patient population. Looking at residency programs, it was important to me that social advocacy was a requirement of the job. For me, Copa ticked all of the boxes. With many, many bad winters under my belt, I decided it was time to give warmer weather a shot! After meeting the Copa residents, nurses, and even some techs on revisit day, I was sold. Copa truly was everything I was looking for- supportive leadership, happy residents, hands-on learning with vulnerable patients, street medicine, medical education opportunities, and a city with endless things to do.
Outside of medicine, I love to stay active- primarily through kickboxing, yoga, pilates, weight lifting, and long walks while listening to audiobooks. When it’s time to relax, I like to brew kombucha, listen to live music, cook from my garden, watch a true crime series, or check out a brewery with trivia. Whenever possible, I enjoy hiking and traveling, especially where I can practice speaking Spanish and salsa dancing.[/fildisi_slogan][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][fildisi_single_image image=”37013″ image_full_column=”yes”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][fildisi_slogan title=”Andrew Keown” subtitle=”University of California-Irvine School of Medicine” button_text=”” button2_text=””]Hey everyone, I’m Andrew! In my free time I like to watch an unhealthy amount of sports (go Kings – light the beam), check out local breweries, and do most things outdoors – hiking, skiing, golfing, camping, finding places to put a hammock. I relied a lot on feel/fit in choosing residency programs and Copa stood out both on interview day and when I got a chance to come check things out in person.
You could tell this was a laid-back, fun group of residents who enjoy being around each other. Add that to getting great training while living in a cool city like Phoenix with tons of access to outdoor activities and I’m super excited to be part of the Copa family![/fildisi_slogan][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][fildisi_single_image image=”37014″ image_full_column=”yes”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][fildisi_slogan title=”Richard LaRocco” subtitle=”New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine” button_text=”” button2_text=””]Hey everyone, I’m Ricky! I finally decided it was time for some change and what a better place to choose than Phoenix?! I’m over the snow and I love spending time outside in the warm weather and at the beach, which sadly I learned after matching that Arizona does not have any beaches (just kidding I knew that). There is so much beautiful scenery, hikes, and mountains in the area that it totally makes up for it. Besides spending time outdoors, I also enjoy going to the gym, being a mediocre video game player and picking up a book every so often. The first thing I noticed about Copa was how strong of a culture there is here. Moving across the country is intimidating but experiencing the camaraderie within the program gave me confidence that I will create a new family thousands of miles away. I fell in love with emergency medicine because of the controlled chaos associated within the specialty and the development of the skills needed to handle anything thrown your way. I’m certain that there is no better place to develop these skills than Copa and I know I will have fun learning them along the way.[/fildisi_slogan][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][fildisi_single_image image=”37034″ image_full_column=”yes”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][fildisi_slogan title=”Elizabeth Mangin” subtitle=”Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine” button_text=”” button2_text=””]Hey everyone! Though I love living in Virginia I decidedly do not love being cold, and was hoping to find a solution to my cold-aversion during residency. But besides being in a toasty climate in a really cool city, Copa truly has everything I ever wanted in a residency–amazing and enthusiastic people, well-rounded rotations, interesting electives, unique patient populations, a huge alumni network, and the list goes on! Before medical school, I was an EMT and worked as a medical assistant at an urgent care. Both of these experiences definitely instilled in me a love of emergency medicine, and led me to where I am now. I’m super interested in EMS, sports medicine, pediatrics, and a few other areas which I’m really excited to explore during residency. In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my cat/son Gabe, traveling and trying new food in the process, hiking, kayaking, cooking, painting and desperately trying to keep my plants alive. (I almost pursued writing for a living instead of med school!) I then moved out to the midwest to attend medical school at Saint Louis University, but after 4 years in the cold I was ready for a move to warmer weather and I couldn’t be more excited to call Phoenix my new home. For residency I was looking for a strong program at a county hospital in a large urban area, and when I interviewed at Copa, I felt a sense of belonging. I got along very easily with the residents and faculty, and I could immediately get a sense of what Copa culture was all about. I’m thrilled to be joining this amazing program for the next stage of my life and career. I then moved to Philadelphia for medical school. During my second year, when classes were virtual due to the pandemic, I had the opportunity to live in Arizona, where I used every free moment to be outside and fell in love with the desert. Since then, I have been looking for any chance to come back! I chose Copa for many reasons- the faculty and residents were extremely knowledgeable, fun, and friendly; the ability to train at a strong county program with ample opportunities to use my medical Spanish and work with underserved patient populations; the access that Phoenix offers to the outdoors and sunshine; and the ability to explore my interests in wilderness medicine, global health, and rural emergency medicine during the unparalleled elective time. What more could I have asked for? In my free time, you can find me outside, either rock climbing, trail running, skiing (and yes, there is skiing in Arizona), hiking, or biking. I also enjoy taking my converted camper van named Luna on weekend adventures. I grew up in the frozen tundra known as Minnesota where I got my degree in exercise science at the University of St. Thomas, spending most of my summers in Jordan where my family is from. I worked as a bartender and server for a few years before moving to Arizona to start medical school. I definitely miss the midwest lakes and fishing but it’s hard to complain about having 300 days of summer! I spend most of my free time hiking, camping, and brewery hopping with my wife, Anna, and our dog, Lucy. When I’m not studying or working we’re usually planning our next big trip. I knew I wanted to come to Copa after doing the ultrasound rotation early in my 4th year; all the residents, attendings, and ED staff were so welcoming from day one, and I felt comfortable enough to ask anyone for help without feeling judgement. I was fortunate to come back for a sub-I in the winter, and I knew it was the right program for me because I was genuinely excited to come in for each shift. One of the things I admire about Copa is that the program takes a strong interest in not only each resident’s training, but also in our personal growth and wellbeing. Copa truly is a family. The program also stood out for the support they give residents to pursue their individual interests within emergency medicine and to be successful beyond residency. Ultimately, why I chose Copa though is the people; residency is a difficult three years full of hard days, but surrounding yourself with the right group of people can make it some of the best years. There are a lot of great programs out there that can train you to be an excellent EM physician, pick the one that will best support you in being a great person too. My name is Sara Yee, I’m a long-time Arizona native who could not be more stoked to have matched at ‘Copa and get to stay in this truly amazing state! I grew up in Flagstaff AZ, where I spent much of my childhood climbing trees in the beautiful Coconino county forest, skiing the slopes of Snowbowl and cow-tipping our neighbors herd with my younger sister and brother. Both of my parents are family practice physicians, so I had exposure to the fulfilling and exciting career of medicine from an early age. I attended undergrad at Arizona State University (go devils!) and then proceeded to immediately betray my alma mater by going to the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix (go wildcats!) for medical school. I completely fell in love with ‘Copa during my 4th year sub-intern EM rotation, where the residents and faculty totally rocked my socks!! They were so badass, hardworking and down-to-earth and I felt welcomed into this tight knit family from the very first day. There are so many reasons I picked ‘Copa as my number one choice for residency; the legendary county training, diverse patient population, incredibly smart and supportive faculty, and close proximity to the spectacular outdoor destinations. Furthermore, Copa’s unique elective schedule will allow me to pursue my other interests in EM including EMS, global health, toxicology and critical care. Because I’m going into emergency medicine, I also rock climb. In fact, my favorite thing on earth besides a cold sugar-free redbull is a long day at the crag topped off with a cold beer and burger at a local joint. I’ve been lucky enough to have traveled quite a lot around the country to lay hands on the perfect proj, but I always keep coming back to my home AZ crags. In addition to scaling walls, I also love to ski, glamp, travel (mostly for the food), nap in a patch of sun and read the nerdiest book series’ you can think of. And when I’m feeling temperamental, I enjoy occasional violence as a level 4 certified Krav Maga martial art instructor and practitioner for 8+ years. Clearly, Arizona has my heart and I’m beyond excited to be joining the ‘Copa fam! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Or better yet, come check us out and experience the 365 days of sunshine and haboobs for yourself!”[/fildisi_slogan][/vc_column][/vc_row]
