Medical Student Ultrasound Rotation
Improving everyday skills, one day at at time.
This rotation is an extended introduction to Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), developed to allow medical students to obtain the necessary knowledge and technical skills necessary to begin residency training. This is a four week rotation that will consist of orientation, weeks 1 – 4 curriculum, scanning time, and video review.
Overview
Weekly, the rotating students will review three core applications. An average week will begin by reviewing specific pre-selected online modules, which describe the application indications and techniques. This should be done prior to meeting with the group on Monday of each week. On Monday of each week, we will meet in the emergency department to review the assigned applications and techniques at the bedside (~60min). During the remainder of the week you will be expected to scan independently (or as a group) with a focus on the assigned applications. On Friday of each week, you will meet with the POCUS faculty for image review and QI. This will be repeated weekly in order to cover all of the core POCUS applications.
Additionally, once during the rotation each student will be required to select one piece of POCUS related content (articles, podcasts, etc.) and present it to the group in a journal club format during one of the weekly image review sessions. This will be assigned during the first meeting of the rotation.

Thomas Whiting, DO
Scanning/Experience
Independent scanning time throughout the week will be expected (we encourage you to scan on the shifts when either Dr. Stowell, Dr. Mitchell and/or the US fellows are working clinically, if possible, so they can assist you as needed). One hundred and fifty (150) scans are required during the 4-week rotation. They will be recorded in a video log that we will review during orientation.
You will attend the video review sessions (approx. 2-3 hours/session) each Friday to review your saved scans from the previous week with the ultrasound team.
Orientation/Schedule
Orientation will occur on the first meeting of the month. Prior to the first meeting, please review the curriculum below, applications for Week 1, and labeling criteria.
